So you want to know about Search Engine Optimization? Better yet, you want to win in SEO Contest 2008. How does a newbie webmaster get on the race? (Learn more about ongoing Seocontest2008 here.)

A newbie in this field would probably do the easiest and most reasonable thing: acquire information about SEO by browsing on the internet or checking out top results regarding his query through the Search Engines.

But searching for SEO methods and time-proven strategies is not just tiring, but can be very time consuming and perplexing. Wouldn’t it be nice to just join a bunch of people who are also into SEO, and just get bits of information from their discussion on a certain subject matter that you would also want to know?

You may also discover “off-the-beaten-path” strategies, which you can improve and utilize in order to ensure your victory in SEOContest2008.

Forums are powerful social platforms, which allow users to connect with those whom they share the same interest with. If you love SEO, then it’s possible that other people from other parts of the globe also love SEO and are very good at it.

It’s great to use Forums to learn from those individuals who have excelled in this field; you may also chance upon past winners in contests like SEO Contest 2008 and get valuable tips.

Also, Forums have “extended” uses. More than just a place where you can get information about a certain subject, forums are one of the best places to advertise. Some forums allow users to promote a link to their website, their services, their profiles or their company image.

Forums are a good medium to get your message across to potential clients and subscribers to your services.

If you’re selling articles, you can use forums to promote your articles or provide a link to your article database. Or you can use forums to promote your newest blogs, your latest website news, or probably just rant about the best SEO activity you’ve done lately, and why other people should follow your lead.

But one of the most precious reasons why SEO managers or webmasters interact on different forums, aside from sharing ideas, is to get an inbound link from that forum to their site. Topical sites such as SEO Forums would merit a good mark from the search engines if you would put a link on them to your website.

And of course, it’s always a game of numbers. The more quality/authority links you have, plus the more traffic you can accumulate, the more chances of reaching the top spot on the search engine results pages, and winning in SEO Contest 2008.

But wait. Here’s a word of caution though.

Some forums are very strict when it comes to spamming. Your account can get deleted if you advertise your website or services too much and compromise the concept of sharing information across the forum just for the sake of a quick link.

Be wary of this important rule, and you’ll never be sorry. Now, “forum” your way to the top slot in SEOContest2008!

Have you tried using bookmarks to save your favorite page on an e- book you loved reading? How many times did you surf on the internet in search of vital information, and how did you keep score with those pages you thought you might need for future reference? Thanks to bookmarks, your online experience has never been the same again when you have learned to use them.

Winning in SEOContest2008 is no different. The power of social bookmarks can be utilized for that purpose as well.

On this day and age, bookmarks play a major role in keeping tabs on things. Online internet pages are spread out like fishes in a vast ocean, and without your bookmark as your fishing rod, you won’t be able to “catch” those pages you would often want to visit over and over again. Online browsers offer this feature, and many online users save their favorite pages to their bookmarks, in the hope that someday, they would be worth reading again.

Some people however love to take their bookmarks with them wherever they go. This is where Social Bookmarks come into the picture. With social bookmarks, you can clip and save your favorite page in an online bookmark directory. You might think that that’s the only thing good about Social Bookmarks, but think again! Bookmarks would not make potent forces to win in SEOContest2008 for nothing.

Social bookmarks are making a hit online because you can share those bookmarks that you have saved with other users. You have an option to set your profile and bookmarks into private, which only you can access, or you can set them public, so that everyone will have the chance to view whatever you have saved online.

Social bookmarking services like del.icio.us offer users a quick and painless way to save urls to an online ‘bookmark bank’. There are some services which offer the option for you to send your bookmarks to your loved ones, or share them via your website. You can access your bookmarks using content syndication or RSS.

However, if you are into Search Engine Optimization, and you would want to win in SEO Contest 2008, one of the best features of Social bookmarks is that it can be used to generate inbound links or cacheable texts, which can be thoroughly viewed by the Search Engine bots. This means that you can embed keyword-searchable phrases or text in your bookmark title or description, and it can readily affect your target website on the search rankings. How’s that as a strategy to winning in SEOContest2008?

Although the impact of social bookmarks may not be that big to make you skip a few numbers to the top spot of the search engine results pages, at the very least, it can help in providing exposure for your website, and help improve your chance in bagging the topmost category in SEO Contest 2008. Try it!

Updated on: “2008-02-05 Time:04:41+00:00″
Search engine optimization contests, or SEO contests are presented by internet marketers as a way to drive traffic and interest to their sites. Since the majority of SEO contests require participants to place a link to contest holder’s domain, it’s also a way for these marketers to increase the popularity of their sites and increase Google page rank.

The contest organizers will typically make an announcement on their website about the contest and post in webmaster forums. The rest can be left to the community to spread the word of the contest. The more enticing the prizes, the more quickly word will spread of its existence.

History of SEO Contests

The first widely known SEO Contest was the The nigritude ultramarine contest produced by SearchGuild .The Contest ran from May 7, 2004 and the duration was 2 months. Anil Dash won the contest at the last minute by asking readers of his popular blog to link back to him.

On September 1st 2004, A new SEO Contest invited participants to rank #1 on Google in for the search phrase seraphim proudleduck. This contest was 3 months in duration. When the contest ended, over 520,000 results existed for the term.

In 2005, webmasters and SEO experts competed for the phrase loquine glupe. The winning entry in this contest was a site that lacked the glitter and polish of some of the other entries and, as it turned out, the page was optimized using a variety of black hat SEO.

In 2005 contest holders in Germany and Poland jumped into the SEO Contest ring with and. It was the ambition of the Hommingberger Gepardenforelle contest to find out how search engines rank sites – this contest ended with nearly 4 million results. The Polish msnbetter thangoogle contest was initiated to promote Polish SEO and obtain the attention of the SEO Services in Poland.

Redscowl bluesingsky, sponsored by SEOlogs SEO contest ran from January 1, 2006 to March 1, 2006. Well known internet marketer Shoemoney won this contest and subsequently he donated it to the number 2 winner.

SeoContest2008 announced in January 2008, The UK Webmaster World Forum announced another contest. Unlike other contests in past they have asked participants to target a single key word “seocontest2008″. This contest will run for two months only and only top ranking in Google will be considered as winner. The 1st prize for this contest is $1000 and runners up will be getting $100 each.

Since then there have been numerous SEO Contests developed. Some of the more popular contests have been v7ndotcom elursrebmem, carcasherdotcom seocontest, ambatchdotcom seocontest, the four required words, CPayscom2 Online Casino, and precharge projectnet to name but a few.

The basics

Search engine optimization is the practice of arranging your web site so that it is attractive to search engine robots. Through the use of strategically placed keywords, proper meta tags and proper internal linking structure, SEO practitioners set up their pages so that search engines categorize their pages exactly the way they intend. Together with offsite SEO, a well optimized site should rank well for the target keywords in search engines such as Google.

Google is often the benchmark for SEO Contests. Considered to be the elite of search engines, largly due to the difficulty in obtaining a high search engine result position (SERP), it is considered the ultimate challenge to achieve a number 1 position in this search engine giant.

In an SEO contest, webmasters are focused on a single key phrase. The target keyphrase is typically an invented word that is a combination of the contest holders sitename. For instance, Ambatch Publishers sponser the ambatchdotcom seocontest, Carcasher is the sponsor of the carcasherdotcom seocontest, where as Seocontest2008 is different and doesn’t involves the name of organizers.

The rational in choosing an invented phrase is twofold. The most aventageous for contest participants is that it presents a level playing field for the contestants. Prior to the contest start a search for carcasherdotcom seocontest would yield no results. This means that no one has an advantage by owning a preexisting webpage targeting that key phrase.

Similarly when UKWW announced the contested keyword Seocontest2008 on 31st January 2008, it returns no results, means it is a fair contest.

The second and highly responsible reason for using invented words is that it prevents search engine spamming. The average search engine user won’t likely run into a contest entry in a normal search. This is a considerate move and is seen as an unwritten rule

A sampling of SEO Contest Rules

Each contest utilizes their own set of rules and they can be very simple or very complex.

New domains only. A condition for Redscolw Bluesingsky was to use new domains only for contest entries. This prevented people with popular domains or blogs from having an unfair advantage over those with new domains

Link backs: The majority of seo contests require a link back to the contest holder’s site. Interestingly, the V7N contest was held by two separate entities. V7N required a link back to the forum while WebGuerrilla, offering prizes for the same keyphrase, stricktly prohibited a link to the forum but instead, required a link to Google personality, Matt Cutt’s blog.

The contests at a glance:
Do me a favor: Link to this post with the phrase Nigritude Ultramarine.
